Online Avani Avittam – Upakarma

Avani Avittam or Upakarma is a significant ritual the Brahmin community performs, which means ""beginning or arambham"" to start studying the Veda (Vedha Adhyayanam). ""Avani"" represents the Tamil month, and ""Avittam"" is one of the 27 nakshatras or stars. This ritual is particularly important for Yajur Vedi, Rig Vedi & Sama Vedi Brahmins and is followed by Gayatri Japam the next day. The day also represents when Lord Narayana took avatar as Lord Hayagriva, the god of knowledge and restored the Vedas to Brahma from Asuras.
