Importance of Karthika Masa
What is Karthika Masa?
Karthika Masa is the eighth month of the Hindu lunar calendar; it falls during the Dakshinayana period and commences with the festival of Deepavali, ending on Karthika Amavasya. This month is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, who are believed to exist together during this time of the year. Their union represents the creation and destruction, preservation and transformation. Because it is associated with supreme spiritual power or divine grace, it is also called Purushottama Masa.
Its Significance in Hindu Tradition
Karthika Masa holds a deep spiritual significance in Hindu tradition. During the month, it is believed that the cosmos is filled with divine energy, which makes it the best time for worship, penance, and self-purification. The lighting of lamps is predominant during the month and is representative of dispelling darkness, ignorance, and negativity from one’s life; it is otherwise called Deepa Aradhana. The lamp is symbolic of a human body, with light symbolic of a soul. It projects the light from within, showing self-awareness.
